Episode 3: His Case

We are presented with a boy hiding and crying in a dark corner of a house. It turns out to be Arima remembering his past.

Introduction

ImpressedYukino senses that something is wrong. Just two weeks ago, they were just fine. He took her to his house for a study session. She is impressed with his house. Very impressed. Arima introduces her to his parents. She is envious of his parents because they are so nice. The next week, she brings him to her house. Upon seeing Arima, her mom and family freak out. But Arima's charm captivates them and he is immediately accepted. While she and Arima are trying to study, they can hear the family gossiping in the next room.

PreoccupiedHowever, since then she has joined a club and has had less time to spend with Arima. When she does encounter him, he seems very cold and even walks by her without saying anything. That's when she realized her life is a fake. She doesn't know how to deal with anyone in a serious sense because she's never had to with her pretend self. At home, she is a lot less jovial and is deep in thought. She tries to figure out what happened to Arima and concludes that it might be her fault.

AloneShe finally confronts Arima and demands an answer. When she tries to grab him, he tosses her hand aside and tells her that she's annoying. He then runs off. It then flashes back to his past where he was running away from abusive parents and was finally taken in by other people. He stops running and walks away sobbing.

Intermission

ParentsBack at the Miyazawa house, trying to figure out what is wrong with Arima torments Yukino. She resorts to fighting fire with fire and becomes rude to Arima. As Arima reflects on this, he is reminded from the rain and concrete that even though he had a rough past, he eventually got loving parents. He then thinks what Yukino would do to him if they were going out.

Look out!Arima finally becomes normal again and wants to talk to Yukino. However, she ignores him and keeps on walking. In her anger, she forgets her surroundings and runs into a telephone pole. Arima belts out large laughter and gives her a handkerchief to wipe herself off. Yukino then realizes that he's finally returned to his original self. He then explains to her why he has been acting so strange. He tells her that he is an adopted child because his parents were bad people. His experience at her house made him realized that he's not from a normal family. And on top of that, Yukino duplicity also made him think of his own personality. When he realized that he was wearing a mask too, he panicked. Therefore, he blamed her and wanted to keep a distance. He also worries that he'll be like his biological parents. As she is listening to this, she says she likes him a lot in her head. However…

Punch! She gives him a nice beating and uses that let him realize his true self. She admits that she was about to kiss him, but ending up not doing that. She tells him that he is a nice person and that she will be like him and live without a mask from now on. They are their true selves with each other, but they still have to keep their public image. He ends by telling her that he will love her forever.
