Episode 8: A Big Day for Miyazawa Yukino
Introduction
At 5am, Yukino's alarm goes off. From 5 until school starts, she has a strict morning routine. Most of her day is devoted to studying. Since she has been seeing Arima, she has slacked off a bit. But now, she has started studying again because of her slight embarrassment with last semester's final. She also serves as her family's wake-up person.
Today, she has the day off because the only people who have to go to school are the ones taking a make-up exam. Arima invited her to his house for lunch. She goes, but is a bit nervous because he told her that his parents wouldn't be there. When she gets to the door, Arima's hair is wet from just having come out of the shower. Yukino gets even more suspicious. Her worries are quelled though when she sees Asaba there cooking lunch. They eat his cooking, but comment that it's horrible. Asaba then confesses that he failed his test and Arima sends him off to school to take the make-up tests.
When they're alone, Yukino thinks about the many times they've been alone, but their relationship hasn't progressed that much since they've only kissed once. They go up to Arima's room and Yukino sees that Arima likes historical novels. When Arima asks her what books she reads, she responds, "money and financial magazines." As they are trying to study, she tries to generate some small talk to get some attention.
Yukino then tells Arima that she feels like she's the only one showing affection. Although she says it's a joke, Arima takes it seriously. He then asks her if he wants her to feel the affection that he's been holding back. She acquiesces and he gives her a big smooch. She feels that this kiss is different than the one they had before. She leaves at 5 and goes home. She then goes home and sleeps early, which surprises her sisters because she never does this unless she has an exam the next day.
Intermission
Arima oversleeps underneath the cherry blossoms and arrives to his fifth period chemistry class late. Although his friends think he's romantic, all he can think about is Yukino. He thinks she's like a big sister without any faults. And then his friends tell him that he's talking to himself. They are extremely jealous of him and his relationship.
He reflects that at school, he's always around a friendly environment. His friends are nice to him and the teachers are a bit more lax on him too. However, he always wonders if what he is doing is fun. In his locker, he finds a love letter remembers all the girls that have asked him out. However, he still felt distant and unmoved by all of them. He was always alone without someone to call a friend.
After class, he and Yukino are talking. He asks her if this high school, Hokuei, was her first choice. He thinks that because she's so smart, she might have tried to apply to a private school. However, she explains that with two younger sisters, she doesn't want to spend money on education. She then asks him and he says he came to the public school for the same reason. He then admits that he's really interest in how she really is because she's is an interesting character.
He reads the love letter he got and it says for him to be under the cherry blossoms. He goes and sees that it's Yukino waiting there. He thinks it's from her, and is really happy. However, it is not. Yukino was just there looking at the cherry blossoms. He then realizes that he likes her and wants to be noticed by here. He feels that she has such an unclouded view of the world and admires her for that.
