Episode 5: Wow, A Trip to Kyoto!: Exciting

Synopsis

Today is the day that Keitaro makes good of his promise to Naru and to the rest of the Hinata Inn residents as he and Naru head off to take the official Tokyo U. entrance exam. Before he gets to the exam room, he loses his exam ticket, gets chased down by a rampaging van, bumps into a girl named Mutsumi and makes her unconscious, gets the ticket returned to him, and drops all his pencil lead. After the test, Keitaro comes back certain he aced it. Naru isn't so sure she did. In fact, she and Keitaro both failed the test. When Keitaro tries to console her, she makes Keitaro realize she's not the girl from his past that he made a promise to.

After failing the exam, Naru wants to get away. After discovering Naru's not the one, Keitaro wants to leave the area to forget about her. Little do they know the were both going to Kyoto. The residents at Hinata Inn think they're off eloping.

A chance encounter brings Keitaro and Naru together, but not before they break their glasses, so they end up hanging out with each other without even knowing. Although they were surprised at finding out, they both come to the conclusion that they do enjoy each other's company.

Notes and Background Info

• Those photo-stickers that Keitaro collects are called PURIKURA, which stands for "Print Club." The Japanese have a knack of making everything smaller, not just their electronics, so "Print Club" becomes the abbreviation "PURInto KURAbu."
• It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to get from Tokyo to Kyoto on Japan's Shinkansen (Bullet Train System).

Comparison to Manga Version

• Naru tells Keitaro that she's not the girl during day two of the entrance exam, not afterwards.
• Mitsumi isn't introduced just yet at Tokyo U. during the examination.
• Keitaro first meets Seta in chapter 25 on the stairway to Hinata Inn.
• The whole nearsighted event happens and ends on the train. They recognize each other before they get off the train in Kyoto.
• The reason Keitaro ties himself up in a rope is better explained (involves Naru talking in her dream, Keitaro going over to her side to see what's going on...kinda ecchi ;)).
• In the hotel, there's a scene where Naru and Keitaro end up together in a co-ed hot springs (which leads to the manager thinking they were couples).
• The sticker photo with Naru and Keitaro happens in chapter one during Keitaro's short exile.
