Spring Special

Synopsis

Under a Sakura tree, a guy is confessing to Shinobu. Shinobu gets questioned about this, and she resolves to confess her love to Keitaro. However, just as she opens Keitaro's door, she sees Keitaro and Naru about to kiss (they're supposed to be studying). The other girls see this and ruckus erupts. That night, Shinobu sleeps with tears in her eyes.

At the second day of the Tokyo U. exam, Keitaro opens the test booklet and realizes he knows the answers and starts daydreaming. When he wakes up again, he hears that there's only 5 minutes left and he hasn't filled in a single answer. After class, Naru and Mutsumi find a note on his desk telling them not to look for him.

Keitaro ends up taking a job suggested by Haitani and Shirai that involves going to Pararakelse Island with Seta. Keitaro wants to start a new life, so he tries to throw away his PURIKURA album and exam ticket, but the wind keeps on blowing them back. He then sees that all the girls had written messages on the back of his ticket and he realizes he can't forget them. The wind blows the other way this time and he loses the ticket. He ends up in the ocean trying to retrieve it. He awakens, washed up on a beach, to a face similar to Shinobu. Her name is Nyamo.

Back at Hinata Inn, while the girls are interrogating Haitani and Shirai, they get a phone call from Seta saying that Keitaro is with him. Naru immediate packs her bags and leaves, even though the results of the exams will be posted shortly. Naru takes Kentaro's flying ship to get to the island.

At the result postings, the girls see that all 3 of them got into Tokyo U. Shinobu decides to go after Keitaro to tell him, and is joined by Su, Sarah, and Mei. They take Su's flying mecha-Tama. The 3 older girls, Motoko, Kitsune, and Mutsumi decide to go too and take over Ken Akamatsu's boat.

Naru arrives on the island and sees Keitaro running away with Nyamo. She later has lunch with Seta who explains to her Nyamo's history. Just as Keitaro and Nyamo are ready to find the hidden jungle, Naru comes raging and the chase begins through the desert. After the chase, Keitaro tells Naru that he wants to forget everything. Naru passes out from heat exhaustion. When she regains consciousness, they discover the hidden jungle and spend the night there. Keitaro explains to Naru about Nyamo's promise to find his grandfather, who has been searching for the lost city of Pararakelse.

After Su's mecha-Tama crashes and they get attacked by turtles, the 4 young girls want to give up the search. But Shinobu says no, and they start the sing-along. The 3 older girls find Kentaro's ship crashed in the desert and use that to travel through the desert. They eventually reach Su's fixed mecha-Tama and start looking for Keitaro together.

At the end of the island, they find an old stone turtle and an abandoned canoe. Nyamo realizes that it might be her grandfather's. At this point, Naru also tells Keitaro that she doesn't want to go back because she's afraid of knowing that she didn't get into Tokyo U and wants to help Nyamo. At this point, the large turtle starts moving towards Keitaro. The 2 other groups arrive just in time and they try to stop the stone turtle, but can't. Only Nyamo's singing finally stops it.

Keitaro and Naru tell the others that they want to help Nyamo, but Nyamo has already paddled away. Shinobu tells them that they shouldn't interfer with Nyamo's dreams, and that they have their own dreams to attain. At which time, Mei and Shinobu tell Naru and Keitaro that they got in Tokyo U. Mutsumi tells them that they have to hurry since the deadline for responding to the acceptance is tomorrow, so they start running. However, Shinobu waits around a bit and thinks. It then flashes back to the meeting under the Sakura tree where we see that Shinobu turned the other guy down because she has a crush on someone else.

As they are running (the credits are rolling), Shinobu asks Naru how she really feels about him, and she responds that she really likes him.

Notes and Background Info

  • I using the spelling "Pararakelse" because that's how it's written in the manga (remember the postmark on the letters?).

Comparison to Manga Version

  • This event happens in book 8 (yes, the entire book). There as such, there are a lot of other little details in the book.
