Omatase!
Sun Jun 15, 2003 @ 10:14 PM

I've been taking a little hiatus lately every since I came back to California. Haven't really responded to many emails, except for the ones pertaining to my future job, and not much activity on the Internet. As such, I got quite a few things done:

1) SECURED A JOB! It didn't really come as much of a surprise as I had been expecting it for quite a while. It's with the same person I did my co-op with during undergrad, so by having that connection, I didn't really need to think about job hunting. What really surprised me was the salary I was given. Won't mention here, but I assure you that it's more than enough to feed my little Japanese addition going (as long as I don't have to deal with providing for someone else's wife).

2) Consolidated my collection. It actually took quite a while to do because I was also encoding stuff (see below) at the same time. On top of that, I spent a few days in pure panic as I thought I had lost 15 of my CDs, including all of Azumanga Daioh, some J-Pop, and others. However, I discovered them in my grandma's carry-on baggage. I had asked her to help carry them for me as she was return from my graduation. Stupid me. Current collection as of today (the foremost pile of DVDs next to the scanner on the right is my "to-watch" backlog. Quite a bit as I haven't been watching much anime either these past two weeks).

I'm quite fond of my "Harem" row. :)

3) Encoded all my Japanese related CDs into lossless FLAC audio format. It takes up more than 65 gigs on my hard drive. However, by using FLAC, I get the *exact* same quality audio as the CD. MP3 on the other hand, is lossy and reduces the quality of the music in order to get it compressed so small. For the average computer listener using cheap speakers/headphones, the difference isn't noticeable. However, due to the next reason:

4) I bought a new receiver for my up-and-coming home theater setup. On the music side, I have my old laptop that has an optical audio output which I connect to the receiver. The receiver uses that information to process through Dolby Prologic II or Neo:6 which makes the stereo sound into surround. As such, any minor distortion in the audio becomes accentuated. That's why your typical downloaded MP3 would sound TERRIBLE with a surround sound setup. The audio files are played through a wireless connection between the desktop in my room o the laptop in the living room.

The receiver (Panasonic XR45) also does Dolby Digital EX, which is a 6 speaker setup (two fronts, one center, two side surround speakers, and one back surround speaker) setup. Final Fantasy X-2 has its cut scenes encoded in Dolby Digital EX. I thought scenes were incredible before, but now it's something to drool over. Oh, I'm watching all my anime on this setup from now on.

5) Will be getting a PowerMac next week. Wanted to get it sooner, but a Mac conference will be happening next week and odds are that they'll announce new models and lowered prices on old models. Soon to be a Mac head, that I am. Another switcher.

The Real 400th Post
Tue May 27, 2003 @ 11:43 PM

For some reason, my "Gay" post a few days ago showed up twice, so the last post was actually post #399. This is the real 400th post.

Just finished Azumanga Daioh. Gotta say that it's a perfect show for a new graduate like me.

Entry 400!
Tue May 27, 2003 @ 8:33 PM

According to my records here, this will be my 400th post on 'scribbles! Not much to celebrate I guess. I'm currently in the midst of packing and will be leaving the city at the end of the week (yay!). However, it is a bitch packing because I just have too much damn stuff. All of it is going to be dumped, including a blender, lots of electronic wires, keyboards, clothing, etc. In the meantime, I'm trying to finish off some anime series, including re-watching my Azumanga DVDs (currently on the first disc of the San-nen-sei box) as well as reading tons and tons of manga, currently finishing Someday's Dreamers Vol. 2 and will be starting Hinata 120% book 2 soon after.

Ah! I have to do a Negima summary tonight. Kinda getting tiresome, but I started it and I have to keep with it. That's also the reason why I'm not doing anything for Tsubasa. Too much responsibilities.

Ai yori Aoshi Season 2!!!
Thu May 22, 2003 @ 5:46 PM

It seemed like everyone else was having a second season except for Ai yori Aoshi. However, that is no longer the case as Ai yori Aoshi ~ Enishi ~ has been announced! From the description, the story is following the manga and picks up a year after season one. Limited edition merchandise abounds.

Grades!
Sun May 18, 2003 @ 2:19 PM

Grade inflation seriously in effect. I ended up getting 2 A-, 2 A, and an A+. Well, at least I know I'm going to graduate now.

The Purchase List program has been hacked into an Java applet. I think I'm going to use the applet rather than publishing the purchase/collection list from now on.

All-Nighter
Fri May 16, 2003 @ 1:40 AM

To commemorate my last ever academic assignment, I've decided to pull an all-nighter, which will also be my last all-nighter ever. I'm current half way done proofing the final essay that I have to turn in by tomorrow. I believe I'll be done before 8am, which is when I plan to turn it in, but I will not sleep! My backlog of DVDs has increased to 5 and I've got .hack//Mutation to play also.

GAY!
Wed May 14, 2003 @ 3:51 PM

I rarely use that word to describe things, but there's no other term I feel appropriate for describing the graduation gown. The color of the graduation gown is a light blue color. I believe it would be powder blue if it hadn't been worn so many times and not washed thoroughly. But if all 6,000 of us are wearing the same colored gown, I guess it's okay. We can all be gay.

Oh, I am one essay away from leaving academia completely. TOMORROW!

Procrastination
Mon May 12, 2003 @ 1:05 AM

It's amazing what a little procrastination can do. To avoid studying, I composed all the icons for the collection I have not (not populated yet) as well as put in my current buy list from the one I have on this site. Colorful isn't it?
