イリヤの空、UFOの夏 (Sky of Iriya, Summer of UFO) OSTTitle: イリヤの空、UFOの夏 (Sky of Iriya, Summer of UFO) OST
Original Creator: 秋山瑞人 (Mizuhito Akiyama)
Release Date: 5/25/05
Catalog No.: KDCA-0038
Rating: 3/4

The intro song and ending song have really grown on me since I first heard it. Especially the ending song. They're both included here, but only in their on-air lengths.

This CD contains the tunes for the entire series and the titles do spoil the story a bit as the names of the tracks are sometimes based on things and events that viewers wouldn't have known about yet unless they read the book. The first half of the CD is pretty mellow, but I like the music as it gets towards the end. Since I know what happens, I feel like the music is really appropriate for the moods that the book evokes near the end with the love between Iriya and Asaba. My favorite track is the one titled "The Last Road."

イリヤの空、UFOの夏 (Sky of Iriya, Summer of UFO) Vol. 3Title: イリヤの空、UFOの夏 (Sky of Iriya, Summer of UFO) Vol. 3
Original Creator: 秋山瑞人 (Mizuhito Akiyama)
Volume: 3/6
Catalog No.: BIBA-5403
Release Date: 4/29/05
Rating: 3/4

I finally get to see Iriya's aircraft! From what I remember of the book, this part of the story was mostly to describe the Yuuko's crush on Asaba. Again, it's probably because this is only 30 minutes long, but I didn't think that this came through clearly in the animation. There's also the backstory with the military in the city that was only touched upon here.

The picture quality in this volume was a little iffy. The picture is extremely soft. At first, I thought that it was just the first few scenes as they're flashbacks, but it turns out that the entire episode was like that.

3. 十八時四十七分三十二秒 (6:47:32pm)

Went back to Santa Cruz this weekend. I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked because of the errands I have to do everytime I go back.

Livermore, CA. Despite all those windmills, there's no place to stop and take pictures.

苺ましまろ (Ichigo Marshmallow) PrologueTitle: 苺ましまろ (Ichigo Marshmallow) Prologue
Original Creator: ばらスィー (Barasui)
Catalog No.: GNBA-1099
Release Date: 6/8/05
Rating: 3/4

I was a little worried about this DVD. Apparently Amazon Japan didn't get this DVD until a few days after release date. In the meantime, they placed the DVD as out-of-stock. Even though I had the DVD in my order, I've been burned before when they canceled, so I was a little nervous this time. But it came safely.

The DVD contains a short animation with the girls pretending to be in space. It's followed by a 20 minute or so talk with the voice actresses. Mamiko looks different than what I thought she would. Maybe it's the hairstyle and the makeup. The first part of the talk has Hitomi trying to convince Ayako, Mamiko, Fumiko, and Saeko (all those -ko names!) why Ichigo Marshmallow will be something interesting to watch. The main emphasis is that they're cute. There's also some shameless plugs for Geneon. It ends with some footage and the opening song to the anime playing in the background.

I wish they would have more programming, but I always enjoy a good seiyuu discussion.

Bonus comes with a calendar from July for a full 12 months and comes in a DVD box.

ヤングアニマルあいらんど (Young Animal Island) Vol. 3Title: ヤングアニマルあいらんど (Young Animal Island) Vol. 3
Issue Date: 7/7/05
Publisher: Hakusensha
Pages: 446

Despite Aoi being on the cover, this issue of Young Animal Island doesn't come with an Ai yori book cover. Instead, theres a few colored pages with some famous manga artists drawing girls in underwear. Kou Fumizuki has one of Chika and Bow D(z)itama also has one, is looks like Minawa. There's also another illustration booklet.

The Ai yori chapter was somewhat boring. Aoi and Miyabi are given a chance to help out at Natsuki's neighbor's flower shop. Of course Miyabi jumps at the opportunity.

Like before, Ken Yagami has a one shot. At least this story doesn't deal with multiple personalities. Takahiro Seguchi has a rather strange ping pong manga. To my surprise, Sora Inoue has a one shot in here about a girl and her envious mirror. Yutaka Takana finishes the story he started from the previous issue. Despite those names I know, my favorite in this issue is a short comic by Mitsune Hattori about two girls who become more than just friends, but now they're graduating high school and have to come to terms with separation.

魔法先生ネギま! (Magic Teacher Negima!) April OPTitle: 魔法先生ネギま! (Magic Teacher Negima!) April OP Single
Original Creator: 赤松健 (Ken Akamatsu)
Vocals: 大前茜 (Akane Omae), 佐久間未帆 (Miho Sakuma), 大沢千秋 (Chiaki Osawa), 白石涼子 (Ryoko Shiraishi), and 小林美佐 (Misa Kobayashi)
Catalog No.: KICM-3097
Rating: 2/4

I think they re-mixed it a bit too much for this version. I don't really understand the feeling they're trying to evoke with this mix. The first version was happy, second was energetic, and third was a little hyper. I don't get those types of responses from this song.

Akane loves paintings and illustrations. Miho enjoys talking and laughing. Like Ai Nonaka, Chiaki has recently taken up and enjoys cooking. Ryoko doesn't have a specific and just loves the things she does in her life. Misa loves dogs and had one as a child. Since she lives in an apartment now, she can't keep one but still loves them.

First pressing comes with a Makie mistake card.

Kagetora Vol. 3Title: Kagetora Vol. 3

Original Serialization: Monthly Magazine Special 4/03-8/03

Third volume, a third girl fighting over Kagetora. This volume's girl is Satsuki, a girl who's way too rich and lives in her own world. Despite being told "no," she's still persistent making up her own excuses for his refusal. While I like the stories, they didn't really add anything to what I already knew about the characters.

Bonus comes with a few 4 panel comics and message from the author.

11. 役立たず (Not Helpful)
12. 狙われた影虎 (Targeted Kagetora)
13. 女教師たち (Women Teachers)
14. 二人きりの逃亡 (Couple's Escape)
15. 危険な夏祭り (Dangerous Summer Festival)

Original Serialization: Monthly GANGAN Wing 12/04-3/05

I enjoyed all the chapters in this volume. It continues with an emotional first chapter with Ryuushi and a classmate who has fallen in love with Ryuushi as a girl (from a previous story). There's more development with Kozue (as Natsume) and Ryuushi in the last two chapters.

The best chapter though, is the included bonus chapter. From the title, it seemed like a heart-warming story, but not related to Mahoraba... until you read the very last page. With that, it ties together a often mentioned background story to one of the characters.

Like all Mahoraba first printings, this comes with a tarot card. I've already mixed it up with the others, but I think it was #12. The book also includes the usual comics on the inside covers and in the back, there's a comic with Dr. Pink and Burabura discussing the results of the Mahoraba reader's poll

43. 彼と彼女 (Him and Her)
44. 新年 (New Year)
45. 棗の場合(前編) (Natsume's Circumstances, First Part)
46. 棗の場合(後編) (Natsume's Circumstances, Last Part)

This is the last of the concerts and includes the last OVA episode. It's sold as a DVD, but it's still a concert. My favorite song on here is Ayaka's song, sung by Junko Minagawa. I loved the song on the single and she sings it pretty well on stage. The group singing Asuna and Konoka's song was good too (much better than Akemi singing alone) and so was the intro to Negima anime. I wished they had more people singing in that one though.

The CD-ROM included has the same stuff, wallpapers, screen savers, and a movie/game episode. The drama has Natsumi with her two rooommates, Ayaka and Chizuru. Natsumi forgets where she put her underwear and thinks that an underwear thief is lurking.

この醜くも美しい世界 (This Ugly and Beautiful World) Vol. 2Title: この醜くも美しい世界 (This Ugly and Beautiful World) Vol. 2

Volume: 2/3
Original Serialization: Young Animal Vol 16, '04 - Vol 23, '04
First Printing: 4/5/04
Rating: 3/4

This volume is pretty much all plot. There's no unnecessary chapters and almost every page drives the story line. It's a change from most of the stuff that I read. The chapters included reveals a lot about who the good and bad characters are, although I don't know if it's fair to say that they're "bad." Takeru's true self is revealed during the last chapter. I'm looking forward to seeing what finally happens to Hikari and Akari in the next book.

魔法先生ネギま! (Magic Teacher Negima!) March OPTitle: 魔法先生ネギま! (Magic Teacher Negima!) March OP Single
Original Creator: 赤松健 (Ken Akamatsu)
Vocals: 田中葉月 (Hazuki Tanaka), 野中藍 (Ai Nonaka), 石毛佐和 (Sawa Ishige), 小林ゆう (Yuu Kobayashi), and 堀江由衣 (Yui Horie)
Release Date: 4/6/05
Catalog No.: KICM-3096

The best way I can describe this remix is that it's "bouncy." Maybe it's the bongos. It's certainly different, but I'm not sure that I like it as much. The original mix sounds a little better than this. Vocally, I had hoped that Ho-chan had more singing, but maybe on her next album...

The drama continues the trend from the previous opening CDs. Hazuki's happiness is in her new bunny. Ai loves it when she gets to make and eat dinner, especially after a long day. She also likes the quiet time after meals. Sawa also likes money and rabbits, but for her segment, she describes the various teas that she likes. Ho-chan likes her shrimps!? Yuu gets happiness from job as a voice actress and also loves wabbits.

First pressing comes with an Asuna mistake card.

This week's girl is a New Year's baby, Shoko Hamada. I don't know if it's the pictures or whatnot, but she looks like she has slightly bloodshot eyes in all the pictures.

There's also a one-shot, Kyou yori Ashita, which features a risk adverse delivery-boy becoming a motorcross champion.

* Summaries abbreviated due to backlog.

Full Spec: 2 Shake Down: Arata and his two friends see a drag race going on. They find out that Kitazato, an older schoolmate who Maki apparently hangs out with (hints of a love rivalry too), is part of that group. They make fun of Arata's car and so Arata and Kitazato set up a challenge which happens a week later.

Suzuka: #64応援 (Support): Yamato finally gets fed up with Suzuka's behavior. Suzuka apologies and says she's not mad at him, despite being rather cold recently.

Zetsubou-sensei: 8書をきちんと本棚にしまって街を出よう (Let's Put the Books Neatly on the Shelf and Leave the Town): The class lead is a neat freak, and everything has to be done in order, properly and precisely. When she accidentally rolls onto Nozomu's bed in the nurses office, she whips out a handbook on dating.

Overdrive: 6 Funky monkey baby: Bike club captain has Mikoto build up muscles by doing push-ups, 300 of them. At the end of the day, he's tired, but while explaining his motivations to Yuki, he realizes that there's a lot in his life he's happy about. His enthusiasm spreads to Yuki, momentarily.

Tsubasa: 81見えない甘藷者 (Unseen Interferer): The glittering are transparent spheres that contain badges that the racers are supposed to pick up. However, one of them doesn't operate as expected because of a foul from one of the racers. Sakura tries to catch the remaining badge and drops it.

Hamanaka Ai: 090梅雨の日常 (Rainy Days): Nakamura makes a dancing rain charm with a vibrator.

Student Council: #26特別テスト (Special Test): Nemu gives the members of the student council a paper and pencil test. After grading them, she explains that the test is a lie-detector and will only show the truth. One of the members, Atsuma, doesn't have his name on his paper. This is because that's not his real name.

Toto: 25: Dorothy is now a real witch and her instructor tells Kakashi and gang that the accessory they seek is in Carrot City with "The Rabbit."

Changing Now: #55運命!! 相見える二人 (Fate!! The Two People): Crimson Bunny hesitates when she sees Dog Fighter, but Dog Fighter doesn't hold back and kicks her.

With my new digicam I got for my trip last week, I've decided to start taking more pictures. I used to love taking pictures, but my digicam back then went south and I've been living without a camera until now (cell phone doesn't count).

I'll have some more pictures later, but these are just some quick photos I took near where I live. These were all taken yesterday, hence the date on the thumbnail. As with everything else, the workflow for putting the photos here is 90% automated with iPhoto, ImageMagick, Photoshop, Applescript, and a dab of Automator.

I am really disappointed in this. Negima is two seasons long and yet, the soundtrack only has 20 minutes of background music? The entire CD is a little over 30 minutes, but 10 minutes of it is for the classmates song, which had already been released. I love that song, but as a whole, the CD is still lousy.

The only redeeming point is the bonus CD-ROM. It has 6 screensavers and wallpapers, but the best part is the Eva's mini-drama/game video. The format looks like a romantic adventure game with still pictures and text scrolling at the bottom of the screen. It's an 8 minute story that takes place at Mahora when Negi and the class were in Kyoto (taken from the manga). In the end, the principal lets Eva and Chachamaru go to Kyoto to help out Negi.

Featured girl this week is Saki Aibu. Is it Okinawa again? There's also a two page preview of the upcoming Suzuka anime. It introduces the seiyuu for the major roles. I don't know any of them.

The new series starting this week is Full Spec. Again, I thought it would be more hardcore auto manga, but it looks to be another romantic story. Not that I have a problem with that.

* Summaries abbreviated due to backlog.

This is my favorite of the opening song so far. It has a more upbeat and energetic feel that the original version. I also like the arrangement and the lyrics to this one too.

For the talking track about their happy moments, Shizuka likes sake and appreciates her fans. Akemi is also her cat and also being with people doing things. Ai likes eating tasty foods and warm things (as it was snowing when the song was recorded). Akeno loves sleeping. Mami enjoys talking to friends.

I don't think there's anything special about the first ending song, but I enjoyed it. The thing I would say about the ending, as well as the second song included on the CD is that they're pretty narrow in range. Both songs are mellow and the music seems almost monotone. I doubt these songs were that hard to sing, which is perfect for someone like Mamiko with a soft voice that can't do high powered songs.

First pressing comes with an Ako card.

The first of several versions of the opening theme sung by the first 6 students according to the class roll. The CD only comes with 1 song, the karaoke track, and a talk, and is priced accordingly. In comparison with the later versions (I'm cheating on this review, I know), this first version is catchy but plain. I would say that this is my second favorite version of the ones I have so far.

The third track has the seiyuu commenting on their happiest item. Yuri had a Chihuahua. Madoka loves taking baths. Ayana also has a dog and enjoys the sunset. Natsuko likes money. Kotomi love eating and performing in front of fans. Finally, Azumi likes the clearing after the rain, chocolate, spicy stuff, and being able to do her dream job.

Out of the 6 voice actresses, my favorite voice has to be Kazumi's (Ayana). Her voice has a particular pitch to it that stands out. Very much like Kanako's from Love Hina, which coincidentally, is done by Natsuko who does Yue. And for some more trivia, Yuri plays Mei Narusegawa.

First pressing comes with Yue card.

Rose Hip Zero: 4: The assistant police commissioner looks at Kasumi and vaguely remembers another girl named Ein from 35 years ago. Apparently, there's some hidden secrets about the government, ALICE, and Kasumi.

Hamanaka Ai: 086少女は失敗を繰り返し成長し (The Girl Revitalized After Failure): Rinko has been very forgetful, so Ai gives her a memo book to jot things down. She even forgets that and decides to attach it to her tampon so she wouldn't forget anymore.

Overdrive: 2 Boy meets bicycle: After some pointers by Fukazawa, Mikoto is able to ride his bike and catch up to a few bullies who took his headband. He feels very much alive after this retaliation.

Negima: 95時間目 闘魂伝承と新型兵器 (Traditional Fighting and New Style Weapon): Kufei wins against Mana. Asuna sees Takamichi and declares that she'll be rooting for him, not Negi. After a fan-service fight is the anticipated bout between Negi and Takamichi.

Suzuka: #61本気 (Serious): Despite beating his personal best, his time is still slightly worse than Arima, the #1 athelete at the competition. He vows to defeat him (thus becoming numero uno and winning over Suzuka). Suzuka is surprised at how serious he's taking the competition.

Zetsubou-sensei: 4僕の前に人はいない僕の後ろに君はいる (There's No One in Front of Me, There's You in The Back of Me): Nozomu finds out that he has a student stalker. That girl is stalked by her former boyfriend, who is stalked by his current girlfriend, who is also stalked by someone else...

When he sees her riding off with a strange guy, he follows but is intercepted by Nemu, his teacher, holding a gun to his head.

Toto: 21爽健尾師範の秘密 (Instructor Soukenbi's Secret): Dorothy is training all night to prepare for her fight with the gay instructor. Meanwhile, Kakashi, Leon (Noiru), and another stranger are trying to find out the secret to the teacher's strength. They think it's his belt.

The third and final Negima drama CD before the start of the anime series. Like the previous ones, it also comes with a bonus DVD with the second episode of the short OVA and a concert.

The batch of 3 songs here don't impress me all that much. Rina Sato's track is decent, but the other two I feel are subpar. The Drops song feels out of place with what I envision Negima to be. It doesn't feel the general mood I get from the series.

The concert DVD is probably the weakest out of the previous 3. It doesn't have the two starts of the show, Akemi Kanda and Ai Nonaka. However, it does have Ho-chan and it was pretty obvious that she was the start of the show. My favorite song from there has to be Rina's song that she sings for the Negima PS2 game. The group singing Konoka's song turned out pretty well too. But the funniest part is noticing all the places where the cast messed up. That and the guy who was caught on DVD *sitting* while everyone was up and dancing. Classic.

I didn't find the story in the audio drama to be interesting.

2. 1時間目 Actress in Trouble: Fuuka and Fumiko try to play a prank on Negi but their plan backfires and they take out most of the drama club members. Natsumi, who's also in the club, says that without the members, they'll have to withdraw from the upcoming theater performance/competition. Feeling bad about it, Negi suggests that available students help out. However, they're only able to round up Fuuka, Fumika, Misora, Chizuru, Natsumi, and Ayaka. Natsumi tries to discourage them by saying that they don't have enough people for the script, but Fuuka offers to rewrite the script (although she doesn't have any experience in writing).

3. 2時間目 True or lie: Natsumi pulls Negi aside and tries to convince him to call the thing off, but Negi's enthusiasm overwhelms her. In the library island, Natsumi finds out that Fuuka and Fumika have been hard at work finding books about scriptwriting. Meanwhile, Sayo is wandering around school, envious of what the living are doing. The group is currently trying to figure out who plays what roles. Natsumi finds Kasumi taking pictures of their faux troupe and objects. She explains that the for the perfomance, it has to be the real club members but she didn't have the courage to tell Negi, et al. Kasumi sympathizes and agrees to rid her film, but then finds Sayo in her photographs and begs to keep them. Few days later, Fuuka and Fumika finish the script with the lead prince being twins (written just for them). Natsumi approves of the script. Natsumi then reveals that she has another member to help out, Kasumi. Later, Sayo asks Eva if she can participate in the drama. Kasumi shows her pictures to her club president, but Sayo isn't the picture anymore.

5. 3時間目 Mysterious children: It's a day before their performance, but it's already bustling at the event location. Fumika and Fuuka take Negi and walk around the place. Sayo flies around the area too and enjoys the festivities. She notices Zazie performing magic. The group then catches Eva walking around, even though she had said that she was extermely busy previously. Later, Natsumi and Chizuru overhear the organizer of the competition talking on the phone and talking about how he knows that the members of Natsumi's drama club aren't the real members. Chizuru then brings Eva into his office to help "convince" him to let them perform. That night, Fuuka passes out in the bath from exhausion.

6. 4時間目 Happy end?: Fuuka is still passed out right before their performance. Negi then brainstorms saying that he has a plan. He assures them that he'll be back before their drama starts. Negi comes back at the very last minute to get a robot Negi to be his twin so that he can play the lead role. At the start of their performance, Sayo drops by to watch. Ayaka finds out that it's Negi playing the princes role and is delighted. However, the stage starts creaking props start floating. Sayo's doings. As the play continues, Ayaka deviates from her lines to get closer with Negi. The play ends with the audience laughing. As Eva talks to Chachamaru about how they did pretty well despite not being club members, the organizer guy overhears her and disqualifies the team. However, the gang still enjoyed practicing and performing.

Featured girl is Misako Yasuna, at a very old age (in terms of cover girls) of 23. New comic starts this week, Overdrive. I had thought it would be a sports manga, but from the looks of it, it's seems to be a romantic comedy with a cycling background. Much like how Suzuka has a track and field setting. This week's anime research comic features Yuki Matsuoka and Akeno Watanabe from Negima.

As I'm extremely backlogged, summaries will be abbreviated for the next 6 issues (yes, I'm that far behind).

* Summaries abbreviated due to backlog.
